Darleen J. Stockley Washington, District of Columbia
Limited to matters and proceedings before federal courts and agencies, including the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Darleen J. Stockley was born in Champaign, Illinois. She began her Bachelor of Science studies as a James Scholar at the University of Illinois in Urbana (U of I) and concurrently began a research position in immunology in the Department of Microbiology. Giving research a priority, DJ performed research, published and was one of the first people to crystallize an antibody. Shortly thereafter, DJ accepted a cancer research position in the Department of Microbiology at U of I with Dr. Sol Spiegelman, a recent Nobel Prize nominee, and subsequently published her research. DJ received a BS degree from Northern Illinois University in 1973 with a major in mathematics and a minor in chemistry, an MS in Education in 1980 and an MS in Electrical Engineering (Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society) in 1993. Also, she received a JD Degree from DePaul University in 1984, was admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 1990, and received an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1996. In northern Illinois DJ taught high school and college chemistry as well as physics, and upon obtaining her JD, became a partner in a law firm in Ottawa, Illinois. After beginning her MSEE, DJ worked for Motorola from 1989 until 1998. DJ obtained patents for technology in speech recognition, telecommunications, optics, modems, wireless protocols, encryption, data compression, text-to-speech synthesis, internet protocols, digital video compression, video encoding, microprocessors, audio compression, video codecs, piezoelectric components, digital signal processors and other areas. Some of her patents in the modem area were litigated, resulting in beneficial settlements. After leaving Motorola, DJ worked for several general practice law firms drafting patent applications for international companies in electronics, software, internet and chemical areas, providing studies of patent portfolios in preparation for litigation, including preparation of claim charts, and working on litigation. In addition, DJ has published several articles including "Technical Standards Participation and Intellectual Property Consequences," John Marshall Law School IP Newsletter, Fall, 2001. DJ is a member of the Illinois Bar, American Intellectual Property Law Association, the American Bar Association, The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and Society of Industrial & Applied Mathematics.
